Seniors' Section (The BOBs)
The Seniors' Section at West Byfleet Golf Club, known internally within the club as "The BOBs", was established under a Captain's Committee Byelaw (C13) "for the sole purpose of playing matches against the Gentlemen's Seniors' Sections of other clubs and other events as shall be approved by the committee".
We currently have matches, both Home and Away legs, with 16 other clubs each summer, as well as taking part in a league competition for the Penang Trophy with 5 other clubs over the winter. Internally, we hold Spring, Autumn and Christmas Meetings as well as a match against, and an alliance with, the Ladies Section. We also host an Open competition where we invite Senior players from other clubs to compete on our course.
There are two categories of members of the BOBs - Playing and Non-playing.
Playing members are eligible to play in the matches we arrange throughout the summer, and matches for the Penang Trophy, as well as the internal events - competitions and events with the Ladies Section.
Non-playing members are only eligible to take part in the internal events.
There is no limit to the number of members in the Non-playing category but the Playing category is limited to 120.
An annual contribution is paid by members towards the running costs of the Section - currently £20 for Playing and £10 for Non-playing members.
A series of friendly matches (1 Home and 1 Away fixture each year) is played throughout the summer, between March and September, with 16 other clubs. The matches are a Four Ball, Better Ball format played from the Yellow tees of the day off 90% handicap. Team size varies from 12 to 16 players per side.
A Match Manager is allocated to each fixture and, after the initial allocation of team members and a reserve list at the beginning of the year by the BOBs Organiser, he will be responsible for managing the team that eventually plays each fixture and co-ordinating with the opposing team's Manager. Any BOBs member who puts his name down to play in the Away leg of a fixture is expected to be available to play in the Home leg as well.
Golf is followed by lunch and the Home team provides refreshments at the Half-way Hut, drinks after the game and over lunch. The cost of the meal for each match is deducted from each Team Member's Bar Card.
The list of clubs with which we currently have fixtures is shown below:-
Penang Trophy Winter League
This competition was first run in 2004/5, initially just as a series of friendly matches over the winter, but took on a much more competitive nature following the donation of a trophy the following year by a Blackmoor member who purchased it while on holiday in Penang.
Six clubs vie for the trophy each winter, playing a Home and Away leg with each club in the league. The clubs currently playing in the league are:-
Matches are played in teams of 10, 5 pairs comprised of a lower handicap (HI up to 15) and a higher handicap (HI 15.1 - 24) player in each pair. Players must be 60 years of age or older to take part.
As with the summer matches, the golf is followed by lunch, so competitive but still friendly.
John Osgood is the current co-ordinator for these matches but day-to-day running of each fixture is handled by a designated Match Manager.
